SCORE is well-respected in the business world and has helped turn start-ups into stars. Examples include Jelly Belly candy, Vermont Teddy Bear, and Vera Bradley designs.

But thousands of lesser-known companies have benefited from the organization as well. These businesses may never become household names, but they’ve made it.

One such entrepreneur is Mente Connery, a Florida teacher whose baby daughter did what they all do: She threw peas from her high chair and smeared them in her hair.

Connery fought back! She invented the Clip-Away Feeding Tray, which attaches to the front edge of a high chair and helps prevent spills by holding a bottle, baby food, and utensils safely out of baby’s reach. Connery was recommended to SCORE by a patent attorney.

She met with SCORE counselors who advised her on marketing, branding, sales projections, pricing, and profit margins. The product has sold well and, assisted by SCORE, Connery turned a great idea into a great business.
